Visit to Put– In- Bay, Ohio
If you can get over to Putt-in –Bay this year, jump at the chance. We went over during the week day as a family outing. There are three of us including a teenager. We are told that the weekends can get pretty wild, so we choose a Tuesday to visit the Island. The Island its self is so very charming! We spent a fantastic day just seeing the sights and enjoying the fresh air and water.
We started by taking Miller’s Ferry over to the Island at 9:00am. We walked off the Ferry and up the hill to our cart rental. We jumped into the card after securing our tailgating gear and we where off!
First stop was the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial. Established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, during the war of 1812, but in equal part it is here to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Britain, Canada and the U.S. Situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world. Monument Construction began in October 1912, opened to the public on June 13 1915, and became a National Park Service Memorial in 1936. I had forgotten just how important the war of 1812 was to the United States. They are going to have to close it for about two years for repairs, so if you can get there, it is a must see! Make sure you watch the short film before you go up the elevator to the top; it is a quick review that puts it in a nut shell for your memory of the events.
Next we visited a few shops in the town. It was peaceful, clean and everyone was very friendly.
It was about noon so we went to the Heineman winery and
took the Crystal Cave tour. The Crystal Cave is the largest limestone Geo
Cave ever found and it was fascinating!
There were a few steps to climb down and then back up, but it was an
easy climb for most and so worth the trip.
After the cave, we did a tour of the Heineman's winery, which is still run by generations of the Heineman’s family. I never think about how wine is made and they did a great job explaining the process. The ticket included one wine or grape tasting and that was a treat! We decided we really liked one wine, so we got a bottle for lunch and two for another time. They had a picnic area out back, so we got our portable picnic supplies and had a great lunch! The teenager had juice, which she purchased at 50 cents a glass so that she could keep changing red to white. She never did decide which one she liked better! Of course you just can’t leave some place without visiting the gift show. They had a wide supply of very good looking wine themed items. To my surprise and delight, they carried the very same wine tote that I had in hand. I was told that they are very popular. Check out my Metro Totes at

One of my earliest memories... I knew three full verses of the Star Spangled Banner when I was seven or eight years old. And one of the nuns discovered this phenomenon and I was actually sent around from classroom to classroom to do the whole thing.
